The Jamestown Public Library was recently awarded a $250 grant from Sign-A-Rama of Greensboro. The grant allows the library to order signs to advertise important events at no charge from Sign-A-Rama. Look for large banners advertising the Fish Fry, Kids and Klaus, and other events throughout the year. The Jamestown Public Library appreciates the help of Sign-A-Rama!

May 28th Fish Fry Will Benefit Library

The Jamestown Friends of the Library will hold its annual fish fry on Saturday, May 28 from 4:30 until 7:30 at the Jamestown Town Hall. Plates will offer flounder cooked in canola oil, baked potato, cole slaw, hush puppies made with a mix from the Old Mill of Guilford, and iced tea, and will cost $8.00 for adults and $4.00 for children. Dinners can be eaten in or taken out. A bake sale table will provide dessert portions as well as uncut baked items. Six Lives Colliding will entertain diners with a mixture of folk music and blues.

Tickets can be purchased at the library or from any member of the Friends of the Library board. The fish fry is one of the Jamestown Library’s most important annual fundraisers, and all proceeds will be used to purchase library materials or to fund programs.

If you are interested in volunteering to help pick up supplies, set up, cook, serve, or clean, or if you are willing to provide bake sale items, please sign the volunteer list at the library, or call Joe Watson (454-1757).

Why Our Community Needs a Library

Are libraries still important? With home computers, Smart Phones, and iPads, do we really need libraries? Does our community still value our library?

In a recent publication called The VOICE for America’s Libraries, published by the American Library Association, Leonard Kniffel lists ways that libraries are good for the country. Here are a few of his ideas:

Kniffel calls libraries “a miracle kept available by the meticulous resource description and access that is the work of the librarian.”

 Brownies Sponsor Moviethon at JPL

Girl Scout Brownie Troop 40936 is holding an all day movie event on May 21 starting at 10:15 am at the Jamestown Public Library. Admission is a suggested food item (single serve canned fruit, single serve applesauce, single serve macaroni, single serve cereal boxes, Special K bars, Fruit Roll-ups) or a cash donation to buy the items listed. All proceeds and donations collected will go directly to benefit “BackPack Beginnings.” BackPack Beginnings directly affects childhood hunger in Guilford County by sending school-aged children home with backpacks full of nutritious and kid-friendly food on the weekends during the school year.

Text Box: The movies showing are: Toy Story 3 Start: 10:15 am Rating: G Yogi Bear Start: 11:30 am Rating: PG Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, part 1 Start: 1:00 pm Rating: PG-13

Please join us for a fun day and watch one movie or stay for all three! (Children must be supervised). Drinks and popcorn will be available for purchase.

A Call To Action!

The Jamestown Public Library is facing drastic budget cuts. The proposed reduction in funding from Guilford County would reduce our upcoming annual budget by 33%.   Doing nothing will change nothing. You have an opportunity to influencehow the Guilford County budget is spent, and County Commissioners only
know what is valued in the community if someone tells them. Tell them how important your local library is to you and your family. It only takes afew minutes of your time but could change the library’s future for years to come.
Visit http://www.co.guilford.nc.us/commissioners for contact information for  all the County Commissioners.

The Summer Reading Program is a fun way to include reading and related activities into summer family time. It helps children maintain and improve reading skills. One great way to keep your children reading is to have them join the One World, Many Stories Summer Reading Program at the Jamestown Public Library. Bring your children to learn about other countries and encourage their reading every Thursday morning at 10:00 from June 23-August 18.

Reading expert Stephen Krashen says:

• Children read more when they listen to and discuss books.

• Reading skills grow by reading.

• Reading helps improve children’s writing.

During the summer months:

• Read to young children daily.

• Read a chapter book to your school-age children by reading aloud one or two chapters every day.

• Encourage your children to spend time reading and looking at books.

• Talk with your children about what they are reading.

• Ask your library about programs for children.
